National Level Webinar Series—4

As a part of Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth’s Mental Health Promotion Activities 2020, in connection with World Mental Health Day Observation, a series of national-level webinars was launched. The fourth in this National Level Webinar Series will be held on 9 December 2002.

Topic: Mental Health on Trial: Forensic Psychologist as Expert Witness

Forensic Psychology is a fascinating branch of Psychology. In recent times, a lot of students have been attracted to pursue a career in this area. Psycho-legal issues arise at each major phase of a criminal trial process like pre-trial, trial, sentencing and post-conviction. High level of competency is required to become an expert Forensic Psychologist.

Mental health professionals face arduous challenges in applying their knowledge and expertise to the criminal justice system. Many times in a criminal case the culprit might have conducted the crime under the influence of a severe mental health problem. In such cases, accurate diagnoses of mental disorders play a crucial role in forensic determinations. Availing treatment and provision of psycho-legal aid to the accuser is primarily important. In such cases, the person also needs to be excluded from capital punishments. On the other hand, a person who is well aware of the legal loopholes may be trying to misuse the privileges by pretending to have a mental health issue, after conducting a crime. Accurate diagnoses and objective assessments are also important here.

This webinar is expected to enlighten the participants about mental health issues from a forensic perspective and provide information related to the role of a Forensic Psychologist as an expert witness in a criminal trial process.
